The names of the 9 guardians were Sunan Gresik (Maulana Malik Ibrahim), Sunan Ampel (Raden Rahmat), Sunan Giri, Sunan Bonang (Makhdum Ibrahim), Sunan Kalijaga, Sunan Gunung Jati (Syarif Hidayatullah), Sunan Drajat, Sunan Kudus, Sunan Muria (Raden Umar Said).
