"This series of virtual tours presented in Ukrainian. A brief history:
Korsun-Shevchenko - one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. Its name may derive from the name of the god of ancient sunlight - Horsa. Probably the original name sounded like Horsun that eventually changed as a result of linguistic transformation. In another version of the city's name comes from Iranian word "Horo" (burning) or Turkic phrase "Karasu" (meaning "pure water").
In 1032, Prince Yaroslav the Wise founded the city of Korsun-fortress to protect the southern borders of Kievan Rus from raids of Turkic nomads, using Ross as a natural barrier. It was a Poroskoyi defensive line, which also included the cities that stood on the river Ros.
Korsun repeatedly visited Ukrainian poet, artist and philosopher Taras Shevchenko, in particular, from June 28 to July 8, 1859, he stayed with his second cousin and a relative Bartholomew Shevchenko, who worked as assistant manager of the prince. Here he recorded folk songs, many painted. Shevchenko loved to walk Korsun park zamalovuyuchy his beautiful corners.
24 January - 17 February 1944 at Korsunschyni was one of the biggest operations of encirclement and destruction of German 60,000th groups - Korsun-Shevchenko operation, during which the 14 February 1944 Korsun passed into Soviet hands. During the operation, both sides suffered heavy losses.
May 3, 1944 under the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on number 34/143, the city was renamed Korsun-Shevchenko. The area became known as the Korsun-Shevchenko.
