The Diocese of Oeiras was created on December 16, 1944, by Pope Pius XII, through the bull Ad Dominici Gregis Bonum (For the good of the Lord's flock), who also created the Diocese of Parnaíba by the same act.
The diocese created was solemnly installed on October 7, 1945, with a territorial extension of about 84,000 km², covering the entire central territory of the State of Piauí, which extends between the States of Maranhão, to the West, and Pernambuco and Ceará, to the East.
As the Diocese of Oeiras was a very large geographic complex, the Diocese of Picos was dismembered in the east on October 28, 1974. And on December 8, 1977, a second diocese headquarters was created, in the city of Floriano, located about 100 kilometers away, where the bishop's residence, administration and pastoral organization of the diocese were transferred, when also the Church Floriano's headquarters became a co-cathedral, and the name of the city of Floriano was added to the name of the diocese that was renamed “Diocese of Oeiras-Floriano”.
