About Punya

What is the need of Punya?

Zero Hunger goal is one of the 17 goals for sustainable development by the United Nations. For India, this is one of the biggest hurdles in the path of making India sustainable. According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) estimates in ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2019’ report, 194.4 million people are undernourished in India. 20.8 percent of children under 5 are underweight. 51.4 percent of women in the reproductive age (15-49 years) are anaemic. Statistics show that out every ten stunted children, 3 are Indians. Even after producing more food than it needs, 194 million people go hungry in India every day. According to the 2019 Global Hunger Index, India has been ranked 102 out of 117 countries in terms of the severity of hunger. Food loss or food waste is the biggest problem in India. Indians waste food worth INR 88,800 crore per year, which is equivalent to INR 244 crore being wasted per day. In India, there are approximately 30 million abandoned or orphaned kids. In most orphanages, due to funding issues, children have undernourished meals.

Punya tackles both the issues simultaneously, allowing the users to sign up and show them the status of left-over food from restaurants and parties. This will improve waste food management if users were able to know about left-over food, then it can be distributed among needy or in orphanages. At the same time, our app provides a platform where willing individuals can donate the funds and required items to old-age homes and orphanages.
