Icon is a Greek word that literally means "image". In Christian art, the term icon identifies paintings with a religious subject, especially typical of Byzantine art.

But the sacred icon is much more than a simple painting.
The icon is a sacramental. That is, something that favors the encounter between the faithful and God the Father.
In fact, the icon is sacred, because it is an invocation of the divine presence.
To establish the importance of the icon in prayer there is also a document of the Council of Nicaea which states: "Whoever venerates an icon venerates the reality of whoever is represented in it."

The essential function of the icon, in continuity with the meaning and value of the "signs" of the Christian mystery, is to bring to the eye what the word brings to the ear. The image is like a presence that is proposed to our gaze, both through material eyes and through "the eyes of the heart", like an open window on the mystery to be able to enter into communion with Christ, with the Mother of God, with the Saints: a presence that becomes accessible to invite us to realize in our life what we see, after having relived it internally.
Icon painting is not only a wonderful form of art, but it is also a way of living one's faith with greater intensity and a help to approach holiness, identifying oneself with the painted subject (Christ, the Virgin, the Saints).
