About BIOMCI

What is BIOMCI?

Currently, aquatic ecosystems are subject to a marked deterioration in the quality of their waters, mainly caused by human actions, which put biodiversity and its contributions to society at risk. This is why there is an urgent need for all social actors to assume the commitment to conserve and manage water quality.

Various streams and rivers in Argentina are influenced by urban areas and productive activities that take place in their basins such as agriculture, livestock, mining and/or hydrocarbon extraction, which can potentially impact the deterioration of aquatic ecosystems. and in water quality. The development of economic activities, together with urban expansion, causes changes in land use that impact the rivers of the different ecoregions.

BIOMCI (Citizen Biomonitoring) is a citizen science project that promotes collective participation in the monitoring of the ecological quality of water, favoring the construction of citizen responsibilities in the sustainable management of water basins. Its area of action, so far, corresponds to streams and rivers in Patagonia and western Cuyo.
