First Mass in Argentine Territory - Fundamentals
The Diocese of Río Gallegos summoned the Government of Santa Cruz and the Municipality of Puerto San Julián convened to work together in the preparation of the celebrations for the 500 years of the first mass in Argentine territory that is commemorated on April 1, 2020.
Under the slogan "Celebration and Encounter", the event aims to commemorate that first mass in the framework of the first trip that went around the world, and also to celebrate diversity, committing ourselves to strive for a more just and fraternal society. In this way, the two-day structured event (March 31 and April 1) conceptually addresses three aspects: historical, religious and cultural.
As a historical fact, through this date the arrival of the Hernando de Magallanes expedition to the Bay of Puerto San Julián is remembered. This is the first trip to go around the world whose objective was to find a passage that communicates the waters of the Atlantic and the sea of the Asur (Pacific Ocean).
As a religious fact, that first Eucharist that was celebrated with the presence of all those who undertook this epic journey is celebrated; and that at present summons to commit to the construction of a more just and fraternal society, without disposable or disposable brothers.
Finally, the cultural fact rescues that this first round the world allowed to find different ways of living, different conceptions of the world, including language, processes, ways of life, customs, traditions, habits, values, patterns, tools and knowledge.
