The National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski” is the only specialized higher education institution in Bulgaria, which offers education at university level in three main areas - sports, physical education, kinesitherapy. The history of our higher school begins with the Decree of Tsar Boris III, which in 1942 established the Higher School for Physical Education. In 1953, the Decree of the Council of Ministers approved the name Higher Institute of Physical Education. In 1967 the Faculty of Sports and Pedagogy and the Faculty of Massage and Physical Education were established. In 1972 the unique Water Sports Base of the Black Sea WIF was established near Nessebar. In 1973, the Scientific Council for the Theory and Methodology of Physical Education and Sport (including healing physical culture) was established, awarding doctorate and doctorate degrees and promoting habilitation. Since 1974 specialized training of highly qualified athletes has been introduced. The High Mountain Study Complex (in Borovets, Rila Mountain) was opened in 1986. In 1991, a center for language training for foreign students and PhD students was established.
