The company was founded in October 1974 by Rodolfo Jungi Nagai. Two years later, the group acquired the remainder, for another R$175 million. Thus, assai underwent a major restructuring and expansion process, opening 27 new stores between 2013 and 2015. Currently, the chain has 184 stores in Brazil, present in the Federal District and 22 more states (with the exception of Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul).
In March 2021, Assai split with GPA. The holders of GPA shares received shares in the assai in the same proportion of participation as the former, and then the shares began to be traded on the Bovespa and the New York Stock Exchange.
In October 2021, assai then bought the Extra brand and hypermarkets from GPA. Due to the previous move, GPA and Assai largely had the same shareholders, so in practice the purchase represented only an organizational readjustment and brand change. 71 stores were acquired, 28 changed their brand to Pão de Açúcar and 4 were closed, with possible changes in the future.
