About IEMaranata

The Maranata Evangelical Church [IEM] was officially constituted in 1978, in the city of Porto, under the name Missão Evangélica Maranata. It is affiliated with the Portuguese Evangelical Alliance. As such, we share the fundamental principles of evangelical Christianity (read more about our Bases of Faith). Some aspects of our operation:

OBJECTIVES

Awaken the greatest possible number of Portuguese people to faith in Jesus Christ, a faith that is both alive and enlightened.
Contribute to the building up of the Body of Christ in Portugal, preparing the people of God for the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
CHURCH MODEL

Like most evangelical churches, our model is the apostolic or "primitive" church as recorded in the New Testament. We seek, in a practical way, to live the experience of the Church as the Body of Christ.

CULT MEETINGS

We have frequent meetings, the duration of which, as a rule, does not exceed 1 hour. Each service has a time set aside for praising and worshiping God, preaching and studying the Bible, and praying for one another. We try to make the meetings lively but sober and balanced, trying to offer God a true "reasonable service".

OTHER CHURCH ACTIVITIES

Women's work: includes spiritual and social assistance to widows, the sick and the elderly;
Youth Work;
Education for Children and Adolescents;
Biblical training meetings and seminars, aimed above all at preparing workers;
Evangelization work.
CHURCH LEADERSHIP

Ministry is lay, not professional. All Church leaders (pastors, deacons or workers) exercise their professions, cooperating in the Church on a voluntary basis.

DOCTRINAL ORIENTATION

Our doctrinal understanding and experience as a Church identify us with the evangelical churches in regard to the great biblical doctrines of the faith; and, in particular, with the Pentecostal churches, with regard above all to the operation of the Holy Spirit in the Church (baptism with the Holy Spirit, ministries and spiritual gifts).
