Shrimps live associated with the sea. They are caught by small boats dragging nets along the bottom, churning the sediment.
Along with the shrimp, lives a large and diverse fauna of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, starfish, anemones and other invertebrates, all of these animals are collected and form the so-called by-catch.
The bycatch ranges from 5 to 20 kg of various animals per kg of fish shrimps. This wealth of biodiversity is returned dead to the sea because they have no commercial value. Many of these species produce molecules with important biological activity and can be used as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetic or other purposes.
Considering reducing this waste and generate products of commercial value to increase the profitability of the fishermen, the Search Network in Marine Biotechnology, Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications initiated this project to find the value of these products.
The first step is to know the accompanying fauna.
Thus, the main objective of this application is to enable fishermen, experts from environmental agencies and fisheries regulators, management committees, members of NGOs and society at large aware of this hidden wealth.
