The nisotak (ᓃᓱᑕᐠ) mobile application is intended to provide language instruction and exercises for learning Cree (nehiyawewin) syntax (word and sentence formation). This application connects to a database of morphemes and syntactic structures written and narrated by fluent speakers. Although the lessons are written in y-dialect, the app can be used for any dialect of Cree. It has also recently been expanded for use by speakers of other Indigenous languages such as Navajo (Diné Bizaad). As they complete lessons and quizzes, learners are rewarded with virtual currency (such as tobacco). The virtual trade goods collected in the application can be traded in the virtual store for items that can later be used to build and decorate the player’s community in the adventure landscape. Speakers of other Indigenous languages are welcome to contribute lessons.
