About RIBES

The abbreviation RIBES stands for "cattle sampling in the slaughterhouse". The RIBES app supports the official veterinarians in the slaughterhouse in taking samples to monitor the Swiss cattle population.

RIBES indicates whether a bovine belongs to the sample. The RIBES app was developed by Identitas AG on behalf of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office.

In Switzerland, random checks are carried out every year for several pathogens in the cattle population. Since 2018, samples for all bovine testing programs (IBR, EBL, BVD and BT) have been taken at the slaughterhouse using RIBES.
The core idea of RIBES is the identification of selected cattle or cattle from selected farms based on defined criteria at the slaughterhouse. For example, how old the animals are, whether they have had contact with known virus carriers or whether they come from farms with a higher risk of an animal disease (sentinel farms) can be recorded. In addition, the number of samples per farm is automatically checked.
