All pilots require certain skill sets to successfully complete a given task, mission or a flight. In aviation all across the globe the pilots are tested for their psychomotor skill sets. The defense flying cadre psychomotor skill sets are known by various terminologies based on the country of selection including but not limited to CPSS in India, AFOQT (TBAS) in USA, CFASC Aptitude test in Canada and RAF AST/OASC test in UK. Most of the private carriers around the world have also recognized and have started to incorporate these in their recruitment process. These skill sets are developed by few agencies such as Aromatics, CUT-E, etc. Most of the private carriers around the world have started incorporated these psychomotor skill assessment as part of their recruitment protocol. Airlines including but not limited to Qatar Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Scoter, American Airlines, Delta and many more are emphasizing on the above fact.

Though there are minor variations in initial testing synonymous to verbal reasoning, general aptitude and analytical skills (log into www.aeromatics.co.in for further information), the key core skillsets assessed for psychomotor abilities are almost similar. Psychomotor skill testing includes examination of spatial orientation, spontaneous arithmetic, time and speed perception, short term memory retention, multitasking abilities, hand-to-eye coordination, information processing, visual and audio processing, etc. As all these capabilities cannot be assessed in a single test, candidates are expected to complete a battery of tests in one sitting.

In India CPSS (Computerized Pilot Selection System) was developed by the Defense Institute of Psychological Research and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), both part of the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) after enormous research. This selection system replaced Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) with more advanced selection techniques. CPSS has normalized the selection procedure thereby yielding non-biased test results that can be objectively utilized for recruitment of highly competent pilots. Each candidate has only one opportunity to take the CPSS test in their lifetime. The candidates' performance in the test determines if he /e is eligible to be a part of one of various defense establishments such as IAF, Navy, coast guard and others.
