Al-Zalzalah (Arabic: الزلزلة, "The Quake") is the 99th chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, composed of 8 verses (ayat). This sorat is positioned in Para 30 which is also known as Juz Amma (Juz' 30). Though it is usually classified as a Madani surah, the period under which the surat was revealed is not unanimously agreed upon by Qur'anic exegetes.
Tafseer / Tafsir:
Allah informs us about what will happen on the Day of Rising, “When the earth is violently shaken,” convulsing and rocking “with its (final) quake,” flattening all buildings and edifices, the mountains crumble and fall and the hills are flattened. The earth’s surface becomes like a barren, level plain on which you see neither dip nor gradient. “And the earth disgorges its burdens,” the deceased and treasures lying within her “and man cries,” when he sees the terror that has stricken it, exclaiming “What is wrong with it?”
This Surah was revealed in Madinah and it has 8 ayaat. It is narrated from Imam Jafar as Sadiq (a.s.) that whoever recites this Surah in his nawafil (recommended) prayers (salah / salat / namaz / solat) will not die as a result of an earthquake and will be saved from all the natural calamities.
The experience of death is made easy for the one who recites this Surah and he sees the light of Jannah as he is about to die. Then, seventy thousand angels accompany his soul to the heavens. Keeping this Surah in one’s possession is a safety from tyrant rulers.
Benefits of Reciting Surah zilzalah:
The Holy Prophet Mohammed ﷺ has greatly emphasized on reading this highly Blessed Interval of the Holy Qur'an because of its great status in terms of reminding one about the Occasion of Final Outcome. Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A):
“Whoever recites الزلزلۃ Surah Zalzalah (99th chapter of Quran) will get the reward of reciting half the Qur’an.” (Tirmidhi)
Although this Chapter is short, yet it is highly comprehensive in its content and possesses great significance in lives of the believers. The greatest reward of this chapter is that Prophet Mohammed ﷺ has regarded its recitation equal to that of half of the Sacred Book.
