DESCRIPTION: SettleIN is a resource webapp for refugees and asylum-seekers in India. It aims to foster community integration, infrastructure usage, government provision uptake, and social adjustment through its library of simple and targeted articles. In providing a wide-range of content on every aspect of Indian civil society, the Refugee Resource Network seeks to address the challenge of integration for displaced peoples by providing information on access to education, access to healthcare, pathways to citizenship, and other miscellaneous topics which are intended to foster productive, healthy, and empowered re-settlement in India.
BACKGROUND: International migration is one of the major issues of the 21st century. The world is witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record. As of the end of 2016, 65.6 million people around the world had been forced from home by conflict and persecution. This is an unprecedented number, and one that includes nearly 22.5 million refugees. Over half of these refugees are children under the age of 18. There are also 10 million stateless people, who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights, including education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.
Displacement can be disorienting and often dangerous for refugees and immigrants. Among other issues, they have difficulty accessing legal recognition and personal documents; education and skill-building opportunities; employment and livelihood opportunities; and healthcare. On top of this, they face discrimination, xenophobia and violence; and are seldom consulted or granted agency in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
