1. Language
When we are asked what gambling is, the spontaneous and simple answer that comes out of our mouths is gambling, yes betting, which is prohibited by Islam and the laws of our country. Not wrong, but what exactly is meant by gambling according to language, terms, and according to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI).
In Arabic, gambling has two names, sometimes it is called qimar, and sometimes it is called maisir. But most commonly, gambling in Arabic is known as maisir, because this word is used by Allah SWT in the Koran to refer to gambling.
So, in terms of language, in his commentary, al-Qurthubi quoted al-Azhari's words:
“Al-Maisir is a camel that they used as a bet (in the Jahiliyya era). It is called maisir because it is divided up, so it is as if the camel (slaughtered) is the item being divided up. And whatever you share, you have made a bet." 1
So at first it turned out that maisir or gambling according to the meaning of Arabic was originally a camel which was used as a betting tool then slaughtered and divided up. Departing from this, the term maisir is then used to refer to a game with pieces or dice and contains an element of betting.
2. Term
If earlier in language the word maisir came from camels which were slaughtered and divided up, then in terms, the word maisir is often referred to as qimar. In short, maisir is qimar, qimar is maisir. The definitions in terms are very diverse, but all of them have one meaning, among the meanings are as follows:
"(Al-Maisir) all games that use pieces/dice, such as an-Nard (a type of Arab community game that uses dice), or all types of gambling."
