About Benalup - Sendero de la Morita

La Morita trail:

The beginning of our trail is at the end of C / La Torre, leaving the town center we arrive at the so-called Benalup wash. A short trail (1.5 km one way), easily accessible and of low difficulty. Ideal for clearing at any time of the year, although, in times of higher temperatures, it is better to choose the first or last hours of the day.

In its first section, the vegetation is less dense, they will have the opportunity to glimpse the rich natural environment of the place where we are, since Benalup-Casas Viejas is located at the gates of the Alcornocales Natural Park. We will be able to see large extensions of cultivated land, it is there that until the 1960s the largest wetland in Spain was located, La Laguna de la Janda. Also in the background Sierra Momia, where the Tagus de las Figuras Archaeological Site is located.
We continue the route and the path narrows, the grove becomes thicker and the shade predominates along the path. We hear the birds around us and it is very easy for birds of prey to fly over us.

We arrive at the end, to the place that gives its name to this trail and our municipality, La Torre de Ben-Alud, popularly known as “La Morita”. From the road it is not possible to see it, due to the amount of thickets and groves in the area. But a few meters from the road is the tower, which has been a witness and protagonist of the history of our town, from around the 13th century. There are many uses that it has had throughout its history, from watchtower and farmhouse in the Muslim era, to rural school or farmhouse.
