About TrueNorth

About the Application

Welcome to TrueNorth’s XR (Extended Reality) Experience mobile app! Within the application, you will be able to explore a virtual double of TrueNorth after-closing-time experience. By downloading the application, you will be able to take virtual tours of the selected business, galleries, and attractions on-site at any time.
Simply click the murals, shipping containers, and businesses to find out more. Or use this application to learn about the rich historical heritage of neighboring sites in Akron from the 1800s to the present as you visit our virtual postcard gallery.

Our Support

Our project, Software as Media, was only made possible through the continual and generous support of Kent State University's College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED) staff and administration.
On behalf of myself and the app development team, we would like to extend a special thank you to Michael Owen and the rest of the collective at TrueNorth for their guidance, support, encouragement, and hospitality throughout the process. We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to work with all the amazing people involved: Curated Storefront, Dirty River Bicycle Works, Jilly’s Music Room, Luigi’s Pizza, Zeber-Martel, The Northside Cellar, Northside Marketplace, Rust City Clothing, Courtyard Hotel, and Trust Books.
Software as Media was also made possible by a group of Kent State College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED) students organized into two groups: the Application Development Team & Gallery Group. A very special thanks to Trent Scheller and Zook Crain who both played pivotal roles in researching, compiling, animating, designing, and developing the XR experiences that have become encapsulated within this application and gallery exhibition co-coordination. Our gallery team consisted of Trent Scheller, Zook Crain, Katherine Armstrong, Eric Glasgow, and Adrienne Rock. Learn more about these experiences at the Application’s XR Exhibition.

Our Future

As we look towards the future, we can see a growing technological change that is already in our midst with the next growing wave of innovation. The first three waves of personal computers, the internet, and hand-held device have radically changed the way we interface with the world by their introduction of digital spaces. A fourth wave will continue to compile on top of these existing infrastructures as the digital and physical environments begin to merge, into the phi-gital (physical + digital), through a re-tooling and revisioning of the capabilities of our camera.
Our future is now. We have captured a glimpse of it in the application being presented here at TrueNorth. Our team has compiled the components and experiences at the bleeding edge of these discoveries into this application. What lies ahead are our visual and information-based speculations of something that will become a commonplace capability in the future.
One that will be integrated into all new devices and become as widely used as the camera.
Enjoy!
