About DILO

DILO is a tool specially designed for people with difficulties in the area of ​​oral or written communication, being an instrument and system of alternative and / or augmentative communication.

It allows both its use as a communication system as a tool for professionals in the field of generalized developmental disorders and the spectrum of Autism, acquired brain damage as well as other effects at the communication level, for training and teaching of concepts both through images and literacy phonological, global and language structuring.

How was it developed?

DILO was developed from the need observed in the field of autism spectrum and acquired brain damage, initially as a tool for the communication of two very disparate concrete cases with each other; one of them oriented to the understanding and expression of language, therefore using literacy and sentence formation for requests; another at the basic level by exchanging a real image or pictogram. From there, the different levels were adjusted and tested according to the results that were obtained, until achieving 3 levels of communication combinable; image, pictos level phrase and literacy through categories, so that the tool could adapt to the different needs of the population.

Its usability was improved for a year through tests with the described population and adapted according to the needs that users, families and tutors marked, cleaning the interface of the application of possible distractors and always taking into account the simplicity of stimuli necessary for their better performance, taking into account from difficulties in attention to stimuli to the motor skills of users, facilitating their accessibility in the population to which it is addressed.

Results

DILO not only allows the expression of user requests, it can also serve as a training tool for new units and necessary concepts depending on the case, by pairing stimuli based on incidental learning. For this purpose, different resources are provided such as the camera mode, taking a picture of the real stimulus, or writing the concept to be trained, so that once acquired it would be maintained in the user's comprehensive and expressive repertoire.

In the cases in which it was trained and for which the application was designed, substantial improvements have been observed, becoming DILO in the students' communication system, acquiring new learning through it.

What possibilities does it offer?

· Basic mode: display of discrete cards as a mode of request / training of the concept through discrete tests
· Advanced mode: creation of sentence level structures using downloadable pictograms from the ARASAAC website (http://www.arasaac.org/) or written words depending on the student's level.
· Write mode: allows the creation of new cards by writing them
· Creation of own structures: cards from photographs of real objects

How is it used?

DILO consists of two different pitchers; one for configuring the app based on user needs, where options for using the application itself are configured; another through which the tool is accessed. Both launchers are independent, so that only the application launcher can be visible on a Tablet or mobile, thus avoiding errors or changes in its configuration due to errors in the manipulation of the system.
