Brief history of Ecuador taken from: http: //www.ecuadorexplorer.com/es/html/historia.html

Ecuador's history is, in many ways, cyclical. This is a country that has always been fighting against social, political, economic and geographical challenges. The same factors that have determined the history of Ecuador during the last two centuries, continue to dominate the landscape of the country in the early twenty-first century.

During pre-Columbian times the territory now known as Ecuador coexisted for thousands of years, a variety of indigenous groups before being colonized by the Incas first, and later by the Spanish conquistadors. Although both conquests were given by brutal invasions, these original inhabitants suffered more and longer under Spanish rule that under the Incas.

During its colonial history, as part of the Viceroyalty of Peru and New Granada, the inhabitants of these lands had to know not only a group of new diseases for which they were not prepared culturally or immunologically, but also slavery and inequality. The economic decline of Spain, together with the rise of the new ideals of the Enlightenment and the consequent expansion of the independence movement throughout Latin America, which the country did not fail to add, got that after bloody battles, this independence from Spain 24 May 1822. During the first years of independence, Ecuador was part of the Republic of Gran Colombia of Simon Bolivar, territory that also comprised the nations of Venezuela and Colombia. This association did not last long. Ecuador establishing a republic gave way to a period of strong influence of the Catholic Church. Eloy Alfaro and his followers then fought for many secular reforms during the Liberal Revolution.

In the times of the Great Depression, Ecuador experienced a marked political instability that culminated in a war with Peru on the threshold of World War II. The post war period was characterized by Ecuador increased inequality and instability.

Since then, the contemporary history of Ecuador has been characterized by profound instability and absolute dependence on fluctuations in oil prices and in international financial markets as well as on its external debt.
