We bring to your attention the first part of the novel “Crusaders” of the classic of Polish literature, Nobel laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz.
The novel takes place between 1399 and 1410 - at a crucial stage in the struggle of Jagiellonian Poland with the Teutonic Order, which ended with the famous Battle of Grunwald, after which the power of the robber state was broken.
The novel was conceived as a protest against Germanization carried out by the Prussian authorities in the territories of Prussian Poland. The author wrote The Crusaders to strengthen the hearts of Poles. He wanted the book to show Poland the period of its rise and power.
The main characters of the novel are the Polish knight Matsko and his nephew Zbyshko from Bogdanets. The tragic love of Zbyszka and the gentry Danusi is the melodramatic line of the book.
