One of the legends about the fortune cookie says that its origin dates from the period when China was invaded and its territory largely occupied by the Mongols led by Ghengis Kahn in the late 12th century. This occupation lasted for more than a century until the Chinese people, feeling the weakening of the invaders, started the struggle for freedom.
At the end of years of battles and feeling the victory close, the Chinese developed detailed plans for the final attack on the Mongols. But there was the problem of how to transmit to all generals, the orders and the complete details of the disposition of their numerous armies spread over large and distant areas, without the risk that the plans would fall into the hands of the invaders.
The solution, according to the legend, was genius simplicity. In Chinese cuisine of that time, there was a cake in the shape of a half moon whose flavor was detested by the Mongols. Making use of this detail, the plans were placed inside these cakes that were then sent to all generals.
With the victory, the Chinese people regained their freedom by starting the Ming dynasty and to commemorate the success of their struggle annually, the Chinese began to exchange messages of congratulation in the same way previously used for the exchange of secret information. In this way, ancestral cakes became the current and smallest fortune cookies.
