The Codex Gigas (in Latin: 'big book'), also known as Codex Gigas, Codex of the Devil or Codex of Satan, is an ancient medieval manuscript on parchment created in the early thirteenth century and written in Latin allegedly by the German monk the Inmate of the monastery of Podlažice (in Chrudim, center of the current Czech Republic). It was considered in its time as the "eighth wonder of the world" due to its impressive size (92 × 50.5 × 22 cm, the largest known medieval manuscript), its thickness of 624 pages and its weight of 75 kg.1 It is illuminated with red, blue, yellow, green and gold inks, both capital capitals and other pages, where the thumbnail can occupy the entire page. It is in an excellent state of conservation.
