District Administration,Kozhikode and Department of Fisheries, Kozhikode has pioneered with NCCR, MoES Government of India to develop Kadal Changaayi - an android mobile application that integrates modern science and technology to assist fisherman community. This app provides near real time information like weather forecast, potential fishing zone, high tide, cyclone alert etc. and addresses shore to shore needs of the Fishing community.
This application acts an effective decision support tool thereby saving innumerable lives in sea during Natural disasters.
Features of this app include:
Compass - Using this Feature, The Boat driver/Owner can view the high precision compass that shows the cardinal directions, Latitude/Longitude,speed and Bearing.
Weather - This feature displays the weather published by Indian meteorological department(IMD) from time to time. High tides/ Cyclone alert/ Heavy wind direction information etc. will be very useful for the Fisherman before venturing into the sea. This feature ensures that the fisherman are well informed.
Potential Fishing Zones - The Potential Fishing Zone published by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) are the locations in sea where there would be abundance of Fish based on Sea Surface temperature & Chlorophyll presence. This feature shows the PFZ locations on daily basis locations and is helpful for the fisherman to get a good catch.
Daily Trip - Using this Feature, The Boat Owner/Boat Driver can declare the daily fishing voyage they undertake. This can help them to record their trips and to track back in time if needed.
My Crew - This feature is used to add the crew info of every boat during Fishing trips. The Boat owner can add the Crew Name, Phone number ad map it to a boat. This keeps a record of crew sailing in boat. In case of disaster, this information is very helpful in rescue & search.
My Boats - The boat owner can enter Boat details with this feature. This can help the boat owner to choose and assign boats to Boat drivers and crew. Any number of boats can be added with this feature.
Live View - The live Position of the boat at sea can be seen by the Boat owner from Land. In case of storm or cyclone, the position of the boat is very helpful in communicating with the boat and rescuing and search.
Past Trips - Using this Feature, The Boat Owner/Boat Driver can view the past trips taken by the boat. This works only when declare trip feature is used. In case if the driver wants to take the path of previous trip, he can simply choose the past trip from the list and he can follow the route shown in the map.
Rescue Plan - This feature uses offline maps to show the nearest Harbour locations. The fisherman can chooseany harbour and it shows the shortest distance from his current location.This feature displays the weather published by Indian meteorological department(IMD). High tides/ Cyclone alert/ Heavy wind direction information etc. will be very useful for the Fisherman before venturing into the sea. This feature ensures that the fisherman are well informed.
Report Incident - Using this Feature, The Boat Owner/Boat Driver can take Photos and upload to the app in order to report suspicious activity like oil Spill/ foreign ship intrusion/ illegal activities etc.
Settings - The fisherman can choose settings and add emergency contacts and other app settings
SoS - This feature acts as SoS by sending Distress Signal. Once pressed, SoS signal will be sent. This is very helpful to fisherman during search & rescue.
