In Romania, postal coding was first introduced in 1974. Each locality was associated with a four-digit code. On May 1, 2003, a new six-digit numeric postal code entered into force, in order to shorten the postal service's operating times. Thus, the codification becomes detailed up to the street level, both in Bucharest and in the county residence municipalities.
