Iconic LGBTQ+ entertainer Karel is host to the tri-weekly Karel Cast, a 30-minute look at news and life from a unique—and outspoken—perspective (audio and video). Karel's show, available on iTunes, Spotify, Spreaker wherever one gets podcasts ranks among the top 200 most popular podcasts in countries across the globe, and is consistently in the top five on Progressive Voices Network on Soundcloud. A history-making radio show host in the 1990s at KFI AM 640 Los Angeles and 2000s at KGO AM 810 San Francisco, he has also written for the LGBTQ press since 1981, championing causes such as AIDS research and prevention and helping the homeless. In 2001, after his longtime companion and on-and-off air partner Andrew Howard died tragically, Karel made national headlines as he waged a battle to allow people in civil unions to have the same benefits—and the ability to sue for wrongful death—as married couples. He won at the appellate level, thus changing California’s Domestic Partner legislation. Today, he produces and hosts the bi-annual Dorians Toast awards specials for GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, saluting the best of film and television. His reality-meets-talk show “Life In Segments” will air its fifth season on Free Speech TV in 2022. As a songwriter and recording artist, he is a voting member of The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs) and, as a busy presenter and more, a member of SAG/AFTRA.
