In Germany, as in many other EU states, consumers are protected from explicit advertising lies and clear fraud. Testing institutes such as consumer protection, Stiftung Warentest and NGOs such as foodwatch are testing products for their value. From the state side basic information obligations are prescribed. All these institutions are organized transparently, easily contacted by consumers and either funded by the state or through donations and therefore independently. Some information must - thanks to consumer protection - even be mandatory on all packaged products. In the food sector, these are, for example, the index of ingredients, nutrition information, the best-before date and more. 2 These details are indispensable in the German market but are seldom expanded by manufacturers.
However, consumer protection and the like fight a symptom of advertising here: the tendency not to provide essential information and to conceal facts about production, product quality or the service being advertised. Therefore, the question arises: why is it in the interest of the economy to keep consumers ignorant?
Many consumers are still lacking crucial information. Many of them could also change through consumer behavior towards more conscious ones
Handling goods, certainly affect the purchase decision. Information on some allergens, off-label names for ingredients and misleading product names leaves more questions unanswered.
With the concept of the augmented reality app "Sniffer", a tool for consumers is created that shows what obscures the advertising and thus promotes a critically minded, conscious consuming consumer group.
