Pina Santonocito. I was born in Catania on 17/07/1961, and after graduating in "Modern foreign languages and literature" at the University of Catania, I teach English in lower secondary schools. I have always nurtured a passion for painting and drawing, which I make everywhere, from cardboard to glass, aluminum, canvases and with the most disparate materials from oil to watercolor, gouache, acrylic. Only a few years ago I abandoned the figurative to devote myself almost exclusively to abstractionism, even if, living in the countryside on the slopes of Etna, near the sea, the elements of nature are always present in my works. My paintings leave room for open interpretations; the viewer does not feel like an extraneous spectator but is actively involved in the interpretation of what is figurative. Often in the works it is not possible to distinguish a figurative subject but only emotions, sounds or silences. Some canvases emanate dreamlike atmospheres, others concerns and disturbances of the surrounding world, like a sounding board for what is happening around. My canvases are a set of more or less harmonious colors placed directly on the canvas and spread with different techniques. Their choice depends on the intensity of the light that filters into my studio, my mood, my inspiration and is strongly influenced by the type of music I listen to at the moment. I like to say that I paint by ear! My hands autonomously choose a color and an instrument rather than another and I just become a filter of surrounding events. My canvases therefore do not reproduce concrete subjects, but what cannot be photographed: a thought, an emotion, a hope. These "informal" paintings without an apparent form hide hints of reality that the viewer seeks out by interacting with the work and with the artist. Therefore, a non-objective reality, but crumbled and then rebuilt, personalized.
