About Atra - Associazione svizzera

ATRA was founded in Lugano in 1978 by Milly Schär-Manzoli. In almost 40 years of activity we have fought several battles against vivisection and for animal rights, saving thousands of innocent creatures from a cruel fate. We have organized and participated in national and international events, we have had hundreds of information stands, conferences and debates, we have launched petitions and referendums to stop many experiments in Switzerland (CHUV Lausanne, Institute of Anatomy in Fribourg, Inselspital in Bern, etc…) and abroad, obtaining some important successes.

In 1981 Milly Schär-Manzoli founded the OIPA-International Organization for the Protection of Animals (which today has its headquarters in Milan) and in 1987 the International League of Doctors for the Abolition of Vivisection (today LIMAV-Medici Internazionali). As soon as it was born, in 1989 LIMAV launched a referendum in Switzerland to abolish vivisection and in the following years it also organized many international conferences, debates and congresses. Many LIMAV doctors have published reports and books that are fundamental to our cause.

Furthermore, ATRA has always been engaged on other fronts besides vivisection: against furs, for the spread of vegan food, against bullfighting and cruel festivals, hunting, zoos, circuses with animals (see link Activities ).

Today, after the death of Milly Schär-Manzoli in December 2001, our movement continues with its usual energy, under the guidance of Max Molteni: there are new forces and new strategies, but the objectives have not changed and we will continue to fight for the total abolition of vivisection and to ensure equal dignity for all living beings.
