Enjoy a self-guided walking tour of the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District. The app covers over 50 points-of-interest in an area where more iron-front buildings were built than were constructed anywhere else in the world. The points-of-interest on the tour are referenced by images from the photographs collection of the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Public Library and other collections.
Especially noteworthy are the structures with cast-iron fronts built by Victorian businessmen between approximately 1850 and 1890 when iron architecture was at its peak of popularity. The tour will bring you to the oldest standing iron-front building in the city, the 1856 Haughwout store, and the last iron-front building erected in 1901 at 550 Broadway. It will help you recognize iron buildings and their architectural styles and will explain how they were manufactured and erected. Don’t forget to bring a tiny pocket magnet—it will stick to any ferrous metal even through thick layers of paint— a great way to prove it’s cast iron!
