Among people there are those who say: "We believe in Allah and the hereafter," in that they are not really believers. (Surat al-Baqarah: 8)
Because hypocrisy is a hidden heart problem, no one can be sure that someone is a hypocrite or not. Even Umar bin Khatab's best friends did not know. Only a friend knew one by one the hypocrites in Medina at that time. He is Hudzaifah Ibnul Yaman. Hudzaifah knew who the hypocrites were because the Prophet (PBUH) told him. It was one of Hudzaifah's virtues that he was dubbed the secret holder of the Messenger of Allah.
Although it cannot be known with certainty, hypocrisy can be wary of its signs. In this hadith Rasulullah SAW explained that there are three hypocritical signs.
If these hypocritical signs are on someone, that person should be wary of not being made a leader for Muslims. But more importantly, by paying attention to these three hypocritical signs we are wary of ourselves so as not to let hypocrisy perch on the soul.
