Natura 2000 is an ecological network composed of areas important for the conservation of endangered species and habitat types of the European Union. Its goal is to preserve or restore the favorable status of more than a thousand endangered and rare species and about 230 natural and semi-natural habitat types. So far, about 27,500 areas in almost 20% of the EU's territory have been included in this ecological network, making it the largest system of preserved areas in the world. Natura 2000 is based on EU directives, areas are selected by scientific criteria, and the management of these areas takes into account the interest and well-being of the people living in them.
With the Natura Drniš project, the City of Drniš wants to present its rich natural heritage as part of the tourist offer. The conversion of old, devastated buildings during the project will develop a network of small hostels, which will increase the total number of accommodation facilities in this area. The project was applied in April 2017 for the call "Promoting the sustainable development of natural heritage", with a total value of HRK 5,674,022.42, of which HRK 4,765,774.50 was approved in grants from the Operational Program Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014-2020 in within the European Structural and Investment Funds. The implementation of the project will develop visitor infrastructure and facilities: arrangement of a pedestrian-bicycle path on Promina in the length of 6 km along which it is planned to set up two rest areas and urban equipment; conversion of the old school building in Bogatići Miljevački into a hostel with a capacity of 20 beds; supplementing the system of public bicycles with the purchase of an additional 12 bicycles for public use, which continues the development of cycling tourism in the Drniš area. In addition to the visitor infrastructure, a multilingual mobile application will be developed through which users will be able to learn more about the micro-location of the ecological network Natura 2000 where they are located and download service and tourist information about nearby facilities. The application will thus become a kind of platform for promoting local, indigenous products in Drniš. An interactive book containing sound and image effects is planned for the education of the youngest ages on the topic of Drniš's natural heritage. As part of the project, a series of educational workshops will be held for children of kindergarten and primary school age and children with special needs on the importance and promotion of sustainable development of natural heritage; volunteer workshops on drywall construction, bunja and guvna renovation, arranging ponds and the environment, and setting up stone benches. For the local population on the outskirts of Promina, trainings will be held on the topic of organic agriculture and landscape conservation and the concept of active vacation in Drniš. One of the project activities related to the protection and preservation of habitats under the ecological network Natura 2000 is bird monitoring, which is carried out by a partner in the project JU Priroda Šibenik-Knin County. The project is implemented in the area of the Krka ecological network and the surrounding plateau, which is extremely important for birds, and monitoring activities relate to counting and measuring the number and distribution of bird species or habitats over a period of 12 months. It is planned that the implementation of the NATURA DRNIŠ project will be completed by November 30, 2019.
