Oedipus Rex (gr. Oι̉δίπoυς τύραννoς, Oidipous Tyrannos, lat. Oedipus Rex) is a Greek tragedy of Sophocles, of unknown date. Some evidence suggests that it could be written in the years after 430. C. Although tetralogy of that part (which have lost other works) only took second place in the dramatic agon, many consider Oedipus Rex Sophocles' masterpiece. Among them, Aristotle, the analyzes in the Poetics. The work presents Oedipus in its greatest splendor, as king of Thebes and husband of Jocasta. To save the city, begins to investigate the death of the previous king, Laius. Slowly the truth comes out: Oedipus is the murderer who seeks Laius was his father and his wife, Jocasta is both mother.
