WE ARE OCEAN Vancouver is an interactive journey inviting schools in Vancouver to sign up and join artists and educators Oli Salvas and Cease Wyss to learn about the effects of climate change on the ocean and how this is affecting the ecosystems of the land of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh & Musqueam First Nations. Vancouver teachers are asked to contact the Vancouver Biennale at learning@vancouverbiennale.com to sign up for the program before using the app.
This exciting project has been commissioned by the Vancouver Biennale and our BIG IDEAS education program and is curated by ARTPORT_making waves. This is the first North American addition to their global program WE ARE OCEAN engaging young people around the world and is an artistic contribution to the Preparatory Phase of the UN Decade Of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) through the IOC-UNESCO.
Through activities based on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) principles and also respecting the First People Principles of Learning, the program offers teachers and students creative and interactive content and projects for student inquiry.
This app gives access to the multimedia content and activities from Oli Salvas and Cease Wyss as teachers and students journey through the program, complimenting content facilitated by teachers in the classroom. Students are encouraged to then submit artwork images or videos of their projects to Cease and Oli through the app, adding their unique voices to this global ocean project.
