The river has many features: it is Germany's shortest power, it is a pure lowland river, barely overcomes more than 130 m height difference from the source to the mouth, and it flows completely through the sandy bottom. Last but not least, the EMS is the most important nature conservation axis in the northern Westphalia. She has designed habitats throughout its history, home to many rare plants and animals. The river and its floodplain are therefore almost completely protected as part of Europe's natural heritage.
