Two hours and forty minutes later, at 02:20 (ship's time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, April 15th, the ship sank after taking a glancing blow that bent her starboard side and opened six of her sixteen compartments to the sea.
- It was quickly realized by the crew that the Titanic would sink since she could not remain afloat with more than four of her forward compartments flooded. The largest passenger ship ever to sail the oceans. One of the greatest peacetime commercial marine disasters in modern history, the sinking took the lives of almost 1,500 persons out of an estimated 2,224 on board.
- The RMS Titanic was the largest ship in the world when she started service for the White Star Line in 1912. She was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners. She was constructed in Belfast, at the Harland & Wolff shipyard. In addition to Captain Edward Smith, who went down with the Titanic, the shipyard's senior naval architect, Thomas Andrews, also perished in the catastrophe.
