In 1934, by the decision of the Soviet authorities, the so-called local industry was created in Ukraine. Later, a series of changes and reorganizations followed, as a result of which the local industry now has about 250 small enterprises, employing 50,000 people. These companies are mainly focused on the local, Ukrainian market. Among their products – more than 15 thousand items.

The decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma" On the Day of Local Industry Workers " of August 20, 2002 established the celebration of the Day of Local Industry Workers on the first Sunday of June. The text of the decree referred to the significant role of local industry in the economy of Ukraine.
