Informally run minibus taxis are undeniably the largest mode of shared transport not only in Cape Town but across the South African nation. The informal transport system in South Africa helps fill the gap left by formal transport systems, by targeting locations most of the population tend to go to, at a relatively low cost. Unfortunately, this system is not well documented and difficult to access (mainly due to the complexities in the itineraries, bus stops and price structures), and numerous clients (predominantly non-frequent users) Might find this complex yet efficient system intimidating hence the taxi drivers lose out on potential customers to alternative means of transport that are grossly more expensive which the average South African cannot afford.
The aim of the app is to utilize data collected to provide information about fares, frequencies, common stopping points and bus stops. This is to improve the ease of moving around using the mini-bus taxi system. The initial scope of the project is to have such an app for Cape Town.
