A set of tools that can help when dealing with maps:
1. Scale Converter
Converts scales expressed in 5 different formats between each other. Available formats are:
- Fractional, e.g 1:50,000 (1 map unit = 50,000 the same units on the ground)
- Imperial: inches to the mile, e.g. 1 inch to the mile (1 in on the map = 1 mile on the ground)
- Imperial: miles to an inch, e.g. 5 mile to an inch (5 miles on the ground = 1 inch on the map)
- Metric: centimetres to a kilometre, e.g. 4cm to a km (4cm on the map = 1 km on the ground)
- Metric: kilometres to a centimetre e.g. 3km to a centimetre (3km on the ground = 1 cm on the map)
All Imperial and Metric scales have their uses and are sometimes easier to imagine than a more abstract fractional representation. The problem is that it is not always easy to know what would be an equivalent of a scale expressed in one way in all the other ways.
This little tool solves the problem.
2. Distance Calculator
When reading a map there are three tightly related numbers:
- a map scale
- a measurement on the map
- a distance on the ground
Knowing any two of them allows to calculate the third:
- knowing the scale and the measurement on the map we can calculate corresponding disctance on the ground
- knowing the scale and the distance on the ground we can calculate what should be the measurement on the map
- knowing the distance on the ground and matching measurement on the map we can calculate the map scale
This tool allows you to conduct such calculations.
3. Coordinates Converter (available soon)
Converts Ordnance Survey grid references into Latitude and Longitude and vice versa.
On top of it calculates distance between two points as well as their bearing / azimuth.
4. Area Calculator (available soon)
Calculates the area of given polygon as well as its perimeter.
