The draw has been confirmed for the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2023, to be held in Tahiti, from September 13-30.
New Zealand Football have confirmed the 19-player squad for the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2023, set to be played in Tahiti from 13-30 September 2023.
The side will be coached for this tournament by Leon Birnie who returns to the head coach role after previously leading the U-17 team for two World Cup cycles, including to a historic 3rd place finish at the 2018 U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
Natalie Lawrence had previously been set to be head coach but has decided to take a new role overseas starting in September.
New Zealand have been drawn in Group B for the tournament alongside Cook Islands and Samoa, and kick-off the competition vs Cook Islands on 14 September 2023 at 4pm (local) / 15 September 2023 at 2pm (NZT).
The OFC U-16 Championship is a biennial football tournament for players under the age of 16. The tournament decides the only two qualification spots for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and its representatives at the U-17 World Cup, which is held every two years.
Between 1983 and 2017, the tournament was open to teams under-17 years of age and was called the OFC U-17 Championship. Since 2018, the age limit was reduced to under 16 years of age, the tournament is called the OFC U-16 Championship.
Ten nations will compete in the tournament: Hosts Tahiti will be joined by Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu.
The draw was conducted by OFC Head of Competitions Chris Kemp, OFC President Lambert Matlock and host President of Fédération Tahitienne de Football, Thierry Ariiotima.
The ten sides were split into three groups: one group of four and two groups of three. The three group winners, three second-placed teams and the two best third-placed teams will qualify for the quarter-finals.
All but one of the 11 affiliated national teams from OFC entered the tournament.
