Local Media Tool: Journalists' Code, Basics of Online Journalism and more

When working with local media, the Press Council saw that most local print media work in difficult conditions and with great financial constraints. Many are in the process of moving from print to online, where they face a number of new issues and dilemmas. Journalists expressed the need for materials that will help them better report for online editions of their media.
To support local media, the Press Council has developed an android application "Local Media" which is free for users. The application presents professional rules defined by the Code of Journalists of Serbia, but also recommendations for the application of these rules for cases that are only in the online environment (Guidelines for the application of the Code of Journalists of Serbia in the online environment). The application offers journalists a short training that should facilitate the transition from print to online media. The training can also be useful for other media professionals - who are often not journalists - and run some of the more than 1,100 registered online media in Serbia (http://onlajnmediji.rs/). The third part of the application can help online media solve two important problems. Small and local online media often do not have the resources to define their own rules for user-generated content and for the retrieval of their original media content by other media. The Press Council offers the media the results of its research on a sample of 70 Serbian online media, as well as proposed solutions to these two problems. The development of the application "Local Media" was supported by the US Embassy in Belgrade.
