This is the House of Mary, mother of Jesus, who on 29 August 1490 appeared to Benedetto Pareto, a farmer from Livellato, in Valpolcevera. Thus began a fruitful popular history, in which the humble became the first witnesses of a regenerated faith and the laity were the first to involve the Church in a process of renewal.
Mary's style is the style of the Gospel: making the little ones become protagonists, those who, like her, are aware of their own humility; those who, like the farmer Benedetto, replied that they felt insufficient, inadequate to the request to build with her. Our Lady transmits her trust to everyone: “You will be greatly helped”.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia, Casa di Maria, is therefore everyone's home. Because we are all insufficient but at the same time capable of great things with the help of God. Sinners and saints. And everyone has always come here, Genoese and new immigrant citizens, village people and people from all continents, families, parishes, associations, movements, expressions of civil society, young and old, those "from the Church" and those "far away" who, however, go up the mountain to breathe the air of home. Here, for over 500 years, joys and sorrows have been brought, here we pray for help and give thanks for a gift received. Here they prayed and pray side by side Popes, Archbishops and faithful without a name but with the same great calling.

And then we meet together every year on August 29, the day we remember the apparition of Our Lady to Benedict. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia has always been crowded with faithful and people who go up to allow themselves to be reconciled with God and leave again. Together with us, the Archbishop of Genoa. Every year, the "Mother House" on Mount Figogna connects places from all over the world, from the Americas to Australia and Africa, wherever the faith of the Genoese, missionaries and local communities wanted to bring and welcome the Madonna della Guardia. How far can a small farmer go!
