The Nolla mosaic is a Valencian heritage in danger of extinction. It was a highly innovative product, inspired by English industry. It managed to outperform its reference models, producing a mass-dyed, high-performance proto-porcelain stoneware, characterized by its small monochrome geometric pieces.
These tesserae, placed piece by piece by skilled mosaicists, made up true ceramic rugs with original multicolored designs, both geometric and figurative.
All its production is original from the town of Meliana (Valencia), and in the s. XIX became one of the most remarkable decorative elements of Spanish modernism. It was exported all over the world, and you can find magnificent examples of mosaic placed from Madrid to Buenos Aires, passing through places like Santiago de Cuba, Lisbon or Moscow.
With the intention of disseminating, protecting, conserving and sharing this architectural heritage, NollaMap was born. An original project of the Center for Research and Dissemination of Ceramics Nolla, highly participatory and international in scope. Subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain, it also has the support of Valencia Capitalidad del Diseño 2022 and the advice of ARAE heritage and restoration.
It is a collaborative mapping of places where Nolla ceramics exist or existed, where we can discover a little more of this jewel of Valencian heritage and design.
