The MAC address (English Media Access Control, that is, media access management) is used to identify the network equipment of a device in a computer network. For example, your modem and network card each have their own unique MAC addresses. Since MAC is a 48-bit address, it can be used to identify 248 = 281,474,976,710,656 different network cards.
