The Manual for Emergency Preparedness and Management of Persons with Disabilities of MAVI serves as a resource tool to provide information on effective preparedness for disasters or emergencies to all persons, particularly persons with disabilities, including; tips, checklists, emergency wallet cards, visual communication tool, among other resources.
Movement for the Reach of Independent Living (MAVI), the Wisconsin Council for Physical Disabilities, the Association of Deaf People of Wisconsin and all its sponsors, exempt themselves from any legal responsibility for any damage, loss or direct, indirect, special expense, Incidental or consequential arising from the use or inability to use this manual or related to any failure in actions related to the preparation for a disaster or emergency.
This manual is the result of years of work by past and current members of the Wisconsin Council for Physical Disabilities. After witnessing what happened to people with physical disabilities after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the Council noted the lack of a plan to ensure the safety and protection of the lives of people, particularly people with physical disabilities, before and during an emergency or natural disaster.
The Emergency Preparedness Toolkit was originally developed by the Wisconsin Association of Deaf People in collaboration with the Wisconsin Office for the Deaf and Hearing Loss. This manual is one translated and adapted by the Movement for the Reach of Independent Living (MAVI) for its application in Puerto Rico after observing the disaster caused by Hurricane Maria and in particular the adverse impact it had on people with disabilities . Our desire is for people with disabilities to prepare adequately to minimize damage to their person and property in an upcoming disaster or emergency.
