Al-Nawawi’s Forty Book and its sequel The reason for collecting the forty hadiths “Among the scholars from the collection of the forty are in the principles of religion, some are in the branches, some are in jihad, some are in asceticism and some are in sermons, and all of them are good purposes, may God be pleased with those who intend them. I have seen the collection of forty more important than all of this, and it is forty hadiths that contain all of that, and each hadith is a great rule of the religion, and the scholars have described it as the orbit of Islam on it, or half of Islam, or a third of it, or so.”
