POSTAL CODE :

In France, the postal code is a series of numbers located at the beginning (on the left) of the last line of the address (place name). Set up in 1964 by the administration of the PTT, predecessor of La Poste, its format was initially a two-digit number corresponding to the department code used for the registration of motor vehicles, known as "mineralogical number". It changed in 1972 to five digits.

There is a postal code for each municipality which had a mail office in 1972. Municipalities with no such office have been assigned the codes of the distributing offices to which they were attached. The 36,600 municipalities in France are served by 6,300 postal codes.
