He was born in Medina, and grew up in the House of Prophethood. He participated in the battles of the Camel, Saffin and Al-Nahrawan, which he fought with his father Ali bin Abi Talib and subordinated to the leadership of his brother Al-Hassan bin Ali, and committed himself to the terms of reconciliation with Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, but after the death of Muawiya and taking the pledge of allegiance to his son Yazid bin Muawiyah Contrary to the peace treaty, Al-Hussein refused to pledge allegiance, and he traveled to Mecca in a group of his companions, and stayed there for months, and invited him to Kufa as his followers there, provided that he pledged allegiance to him by the caliphate, and they wrote to him that they are in an army prepared to vault over the Umayyads. He answered them, and he left Mecca with his loyalists, his women, his offspring, and about eighty of his men. Hussein was severely wounded, and he fell off his horse, and cut off his head Shammar bin Dhi Al-Jushan, and sent his head, his women and children to Damascus.
His body was buried in Karbala. According to the Shiite narrations, his head was buried in Karbala with his body when the captives of the people of the house returned from the Levant, while the Sunnis differed over the place in which the head was buried, and it was said in Damascus, and it was said in Karbala with the body, and it was said elsewhere.
