OGWAMA was established in October, 2019 through an Executive order and promulgated into law by the State House of Assembly in July, 2020.
Prior to the creation of OGWAMA, the Ministry of Environment and OGEPA were the agencies saddled with the responsibilities of managing waste in the State. Waste Management is at the forefront of Environment but there was no coordinated template in place to match up with standard best practices in Waste Management.
OGWAMA is all about waste management and ensuring that we have an institution that would have a coordinated approach to issues of waste management in the State, such as managing the source of waste and designing storage systems that would address efficient and effective collection. This is intended to ensure proper disposal of waste and new strategies of conversion, i.e. waste to wealth.
In the course of doing this the Agency created job opportunities for people by evolving indigenous strategies and business models to solve the problems of waste management in the State.
